He began his first tentative steps toward a radio career by announcing at his school games. Holthus graduated from Kansas State University in 1979 with a Bachelor’s in Journalism and a business administration degree in 1980.

Mitch Holthus replaced Steve Physioc in 1983 as the radio voice of the Kansas State Wildcats. His role was to broadcast the schools’ football and basketball games until 1996. In the early 1990s, he was a finalist for broadcasting jobs with several NFL teams. Some of these include the Minnesota Vikings, Chicago Bears, and Atlanta Falcons.
