Marsai Martin celebrated her eighteenth birthday in style over the weekend. The Black-ish star received loving messages from her family, friends, and co-workers.
Tracee Ellis Ross, who was Marsai’a onscreen mom for years on Black-ish, shared a throwback clip of her and Marsai onset. Tracee celebrated her and Marsai’s glasses in the footage. “Two girls with glasses,” Ross shared in the clip. The actress went on to celebrate her former co-star in the caption section of her Instagram post.
“Happy 18th, @marsaimartin,” Tracee wrote to Marsai. “You being 18 is CRAZY,” Ross added. “Love you to the moon,” the actress shared. “Your forever TV Mama.”
Kelly Rowland and Yara Shahidi also took to social media with birthday wishes for Marsai Martin. “Besos for the Birthday Girl,” Yara wrote to Marsai. “@marsaimartin is now an adult but she’s ALWAYS BEEN A MOGUL,” Shahidi said. “Dearest Marsai,” Kelly began her message. “To know you is to love you. PERIOD,” Rowland exclaimed. “May God grant you all your heart’s desires, AND THEN SOME,” Kelly wrote online. “HAPPY BIRTHDAY, GENIUS! Love you!”
Marsai Martin got her big break as Diane Johnson on Black-ish. She has since moved forward in the entertainment industry as the owner of a production company, Genius Productions, which signed a first-look production deal with Universal in 2019.
“In so many ways I’m being underestimated a lot because of my age,” Marsai said during an interview last year. “I used to get, ‘You’re too young to do whatever’ a lot,” she admitted. “But I think now that people see the work that I’m doing and how busy I am with trying to bring out content … they don’t say that anymore,” Martin shared. “[Now] it’s more of them witnessing the unexpected.”
Marsai Martin’s first big movie production came in 2019. She also starred in PAW Patrol: The Movie last year.
