Mark Hamill's accident during the filming of STAR WARS

According to Wikipedia:

"On January 11, 1977, before shooting one of his scenes in STAR WARS, Hamill was in a car accident in which he fractured his nose and left cheekbone. As a result, a double was used for the landspeeder pickup shots. According to a recorded interview, he was driving his BMW on a freeway, became distracted, and seeing that he was missing his off ramp, attempted to negotiate four lanes of traffic. Hamill later said that the stories surrounding his injuries had become exaggerated. Confirming that he had only broken his nose, he observed that "over the years it's [been] built up into having my face reconstructed with plastic surgery."

Well, maybe the reason why stories of his injuries were "exaggerated" is that his face looks VERY different in the second and third STAR WARS movies than it does in the first. So, what's the real truth here?

I think that's some Hammill backpedaling. I think his face looked VERY different post accident.

The real Mark Hamill died and was replaced with a lookalike

He was never as cute as he was in that first movie.

As I recall, Hamill had signed to do a tv show. The accident prevented him from doing the TV show freeing him to do the sequel.

I completely agree, but why do you suppose he would want to downplay the severity of the accident, especially when everyone who saw those movies could clearly see that the story about full facial reconstruction seemed to be closer to the truth?

After taking a look at some photos his nose looks different, but the other thing I noticed is that his chin looks definitely different.

Back then? So he could keep working. Now? So he won't be associated with it forever.

“A” TV show?! How about the most iconic TV show of the 70s or any era really - Eight Is Enough!

Interesting theory, but the fact remains that EVERYONE could see how different his face looked, regardless of how extensive the reconstructive surgery was. So I just don't get the point of lying about it, if that's what he did.

This thread useless without pictures.

I thought he admitted that he almost lost his eyeball in this wreck and it permanently altered his career in favor of voice work. A fact he has said he is actually grateful for.

I think there was a thread on this a few years ago. This accident has always been a bit of a mystery.

Mark is active on Twitter. Does anyone want to ask him?

He looked super freaky in the Holiday special. This article compares his changing facial features between a New Hope, the Holiday Special, and Empire Strikes Back.

In the Star Wars Holiday Special, he looks cracked out, not just PSed.

by Anonymousreply 14June 9, 2022 12:56 AM

Many years later, Carrie Fisher said she couldn't even remember filming the Star Wars Holiday Special because she was so zonked on drugs. She's visibly fucked up in her scenes.

by Anonymousreply 15June 9, 2022 1:09 AM

Yeah, look at him in the Holiday Special or in his appearance on The Muppet Show. He looks like someone wearing a Mark Hamill mask. It’s creepy.

by Anonymousreply 16June 9, 2022 1:11 AM

He was on a lot of drugs after that accident. I could have sworn he even said he was worried he would be addicted to the meds they had him on.

by Anonymousreply 17June 9, 2022 1:31 AM

He was apparently bi in the 70s. We had a thread here years ago with stories.
