Glenn Medeiros

Why wasn't he a bigger star? He had the looks and swagger. More talented than the boys from NKOTB if you ask me. Maybe he didn't present hole. My own $.02, his music was rather bland, generic pop. Cute and talented, yes, but if you record forgettable songs, you're not going to last.

Talent doesn't necessarily mean success. Many very talented singers and musicians never broke it big or just one one or two big to medium hits and then never heard from. It's a combination of talent, promotion, timing and luck.

A lot of it really is luck. He would have fit in as a member of NKOTB and rode their wave of success. But even NKOTB didn't exactly last forever. Being in the music industry means that you're largely at the mercy of forces outside of your control.

by Anonymousreply 20February 26, 2021 3:55 AM

He and Jordan Knight look alike. Present-day teen idol Shawn Mendes kind of looks like both of them.

I actually think if Glenn was in NKOTB and Jordan Knight was a solo act instead then Jordan would have been bigger because he could also dance and thus serve as a competition for Bobby Brown and Michael Jackson.

by Anonymousreply 21July 1, 2021 10:39 PM

by Anonymousreply 22July 1, 2021 10:47 PM

Yeah, teen idols have to be non-threatening. I don't think MJ had any sexual energy either though . Madonna and Prince were the ones who really brought the sexiness.

by Anonymousreply 37July 2, 2021 1:27 AM

Shawn Mendes was lucky to get famous off of social media. He will die on social media. The pre-2000s teen pop acts had their run and faded into obscurity. Some even got jobs in other fields like education, science or law.

It's true and also ironic that musicians do not have to be particularly talented or even produce lots of hits to stay in the spotlight these days. Demi Lovato comes to mind.

by Anonymousreply 49July 2, 2021 5:43 AM

Yeah, social media changed everything. Years ago, artists had to produce new music all the time to stay relevant, they couldn't take even a couple years off. Now social media keeps them in the public eye. Justin Bieber, for example, went five or six years between albums.

by Anonymousreply 50July 2, 2021 5:56 AM

Bieber was a social media phenomenon himself and he was protected by the music industry even at his lowest. Despite having marginal talent, little class and being a huge drug addict. He has a devoted fandom of "Beliebers" and is a fashion icon to basic twinks. So jr makes the industry money. Once he hits 30 and the drugs completely ruin his looks. He'll be over.

by Anonymousreply 55July 2, 2021 2:44 PM

It’s not entirely true that artists who were big in the 80s had to put out constant records to stay relevant. Janet, for instance, had big gaps between her 80s-90s output and each album was bigger than the previous. MJ also had long stretches between albums. Prince put out an album a year because he was prolific. I think, for the most part, it just depended on how an artist craved the spotlight that determined the frequency of their output.

by Anonymousreply 56July 2, 2021 3:28 PM

OK Glenn was not on the level of MJ's fame to do that. MJ was world famous since he was 11 years old. Thriller was the biggest event event in the 80s pop scene. Janet didn't have big gaps, most of her albums were 4 years apart and she still released a single or two to keep the audience interested. Whitney Houston, Justin Timberlake or George Michael are a better example of a big gap between releases. JT waited 7 years after FS/LS to release 20/20 Experience and he acted in a ton of movies and did SNL skits to keep his audience interested. Whitney also acted in films and was featured heavily in film soundtracks. But she did this between two studio albums, I'm Your Baby Tonight (1990) and My Love is Your Love (1998).

by Anonymousreply 57July 2, 2021 4:03 PM

Artists today are just on social media between projects, they don't do jack shit. Back then there were one-off singles and other work that artists did between big releases. Madonna always had songs from movie soundtracks between studio albums.

by Anonymousreply 58July 2, 2021 4:16 PM

Timberlake and Beyoncé still release singles and do other projects in between their albums but they are pre-2000 teen pop artists, so they had that work ethic instilled into them. Bieber, Demi, Shawn, Lil Nas X and Miley are just social media addicts who don't like to work.

by Anonymousreply 59July 2, 2021 4:26 PM

Some of you are really ignorant. Artists in the streaming age know all about keeping a regular release pattern. Features/Collabs/remixes are even bigger than they've ever been in the streaming age.

by Anonymousreply 60July 2, 2021 7:31 PM

r60 that's not really true.

by Anonymousreply 61July 2, 2021 7:36 PM

Lil Nas X is a poor example. He had a massive hit out of the gate with "Old Town Road." That put a lot of pressure on his follow up singles. "Montero" has been a huge success and he has an album coming before the end of the year.

Miley had several recent collabortions. Ditto Demi Lovato.

by Anonymousreply 62July 2, 2021 7:37 PM

Lil Nas X is the only one I feel has potential to be big and mainstream. He and Doja Cat are pretty much replacing Drake and Nicki. I think Bieber, Miley, Demi and Selena only have their fans at this point, all of them are aging out and their antics aren't as cute anymore.

by Anonymousreply 63July 2, 2021 8:22 PM

In today's pop music world you age out by 30, if not a little earlier.

by Anonymousreply 64July 2, 2021 8:23 PM

Ariana Grande must be almost 30 but she's still doing very well. If the music doesn't connect, the career declines. For all Miley's talk, she doesn't know who she is an artist. I'm not a Grande fan at all but her work is connecting with a huge number of people.

by Anonymousreply 65July 2, 2021 8:26 PM

Do adults (over 30) still listen or make music? Why is it that only people under 30 are allowed to make music? Will we exclusively have teen novelists, fine-artists, scientists and politicians in the future?

by Anonymousreply 66July 2, 2021 8:42 PM

R66 Musicians don't make as much money in the streaming era. Talented musicians who have more adult responsibilities don't have as much incentive while young adults who are more adept at social media focus most of their energy on branding and marketing. Production techniques are also more accessible meaning that there is less of a barrier for entry, especially for younger people.

Even in the 90s, there was a lot of care and attention paid to creating pop music that relied more on songcraft than production techniques and gimmicks.

Good for him for knowing when his time was over, leaving the business and having a fulfilling life. So many of them just can't accept when their time is up and they can't move on, and they become sad embarrassments.

by Anonymousreply 71July 2, 2021 9:56 PM

[quote] his label originally wanted to make him a male Whitney but then changed it to trying to make him a white Bobby Brown.

But even Whitney herself had to become a "Bobby Brown" (to the point of marrying Bobby Brown) in the early 90s. Her album "I'm Your Baby Tonight" had lots of new jack swing. For awhile in the early 90s, it seemed as though every artist had to imitate Bobby Brown or Babyface or incorporate elements of new jack swing, even if it wasn't a good fit for them. "She Ain't Worth It" wasn't a bad song (it went to #1 but is almost never heard anymore), but Glenn seemed so awkward and out of place being paired with Bobby Brown and trying to dance in the video.

by Anonymousreply 75July 2, 2021 10:29 PM

Bobby and Face didn’t start the New Jack boom. That genre was created by Janet/Jam/Lewis with 1986’s groundbreaking Control. Bobby’s “My Prerogative” video was even a near carbon copy of Janet’s “Control” video, down to the live performance and the headset mic.

R77 Music from that period has held up far better than anything from the early to mid 2000s. Similarly, I don't see any pop music from today that will stand the test of time.

by Anonymousreply 78July 3, 2021 12:56 AM

r78 music from that period was absolute shit and sounds very dated, with a few exceptions. Check out the Billboard Hot 100 songs of 1990. You never hear many of these anymore, for good reason.

by Anonymousreply 79July 3, 2021 1:04 AM

R79 Several of the musicians who charted had decades long careers and even ones who didn't like Paula Abdul still have fans today. I thought 80s music was better overall, but R&B peaked creatively in the 90s, and there was still lots of variety.

by Anonymousreply 80July 3, 2021 1:07 AM

r80 Paula Abdul was garbage. Rod Stewart had a decades-long career and his Adult Contemporary phase was putrid. Early 90s R&B has a very dated sound. It didn't hold up and you don't hear a lot of music from this period anymore.

by Anonymousreply 81July 3, 2021 1:17 AM

Control was more Minneapolis sound. It was very much from the school of Prince. Don't get me wrong, Janet planted the seeds for the new jack swing movement but I think Keith Sweat was really the one to introduce the sound. New Edition, Bobby Brown and Paula Abdul became the faces of it when they all released their albums in 1988. Janet's Rhythm Nation was a definitive new jack swing album. Whitney hopped on board with I'm Your Baby, Tonight and even Michael Jackson with his Dangerous album in 1991.

by Anonymousreply 82July 3, 2021 1:31 AM

New Jack Swing was so popular, and then it was over so fast when Hip Hip became the new thing.

by Anonymousreply 83July 3, 2021 1:33 AM

80s hip hop was closely connected to freestyle, house and new jack swing. All were derivative of funk, disco and electro music. It was hardcore rap with socially conscious lyrics that really shifted the game in the early 90s.

by Anonymousreply 84July 3, 2021 1:36 AM

The early 2000s had a lot of good music. But it was very producer driven. The younger pop stars of that time were very much vessels. R&B was still pretty good. Rock was also still pretty good in the alternative and punk scene. Rap was hit or miss, the materialism and misogyny didn't age well. The teen pop didn't age well and by 2002 that sound was dead but for some people associate the 2000s with it.

by Anonymousreply 85July 3, 2021 1:50 AM

Some of you are forgetting grunge.

by Anonymousreply 86July 3, 2021 1:52 AM

I would say grunge, alternative pop and hardcore hip-hop killed the new jack swing/freestyle/bubblegum dance sound of the late 80s. Just like urban/pop rap and post-punk/pop punk killed the teen pop explosion of the late 90s. The only difference is Britney, Christina, Timberlake and Beyoncé survived and had careers after. While Paula, Tiffany, Debbie and Glenn didn't.

by Anonymousreply 87July 3, 2021 1:58 AM

I've listened to Glenn's songs and while they are cheesy. They are far more listenable than NKOTB and Paula who only have their hit singles that are enjoyable. Glenn did have an awesome set of pipes. It was a regression when he decided to do new jack swing because it didn't fit him. He was a more listenable and sexier Michael Bolton and younger too so the sappy love songs were less creepy. He and Rick Astley had talent but were stuck doing 5he type of music that made them the butt of jokes.

by Anonymousreply 88July 3, 2021 2:08 AM

Another gem in the Glenn Medeiros vein from that era was "I Remember Holding You." It was the only hit by Boys Club. One of the members was Gene Wolfgramm from The Jets, who had left the group to form this duo.

Glenn is famous in the UK for 2 things.

The first is Nothing's Gonna Change My Love For You, which spent a month at #1 during the summer. He spent his 18th birthday in the UK promoting it and when he appeared on Top Of The Pops the producers had Kim Wilde come out and give him a cake and a peck on the cheek.

The other thing he's famous for is an appearance on Juke Box Jury. It was a famous show in the 60s where celebrities would discuss new single releases and the BBC brought it back for a couple of years. A jury comprising of Neneh Cherry (What's she like anyway?) footballer Justin Fashanu, comedians Bob Mortimer and Vic Reeves and DJ Alan Freeman were asked for their opinions on whatever song was the follow up to She Ain't Worth It. The jury didn't hold back, they hated the song, and then they brought Glenn out as the "surprise guest". It was incredibly mean but he handled it as well as he could.
