David Rain Obituary, Death Cause – Norwood Young America, MN, recently bid farewell to one of its most beloved community members, David D. Rain, who passed away on October 23, 2023, at the age of 73. His memorial service, held at All Saints Lutheran Church on October 30, 2023, brought together a community of friends and family to celebrate a life well-lived. David’s legacy is not just about the melodies he played, but the profound impact he had on the lives he touched.
Born on October 6, 1950, in Winona, Minnesota, David Duane Rain was the son of Chester and Lillian Rain. At the tender age of two, David’s family relocated to Compton, California, due to his father’s job, while his mother continued her career as a Licensed Practical Nurse. It was in California that David’s journey in music began, culminating in a lifelong passion for the art. He graduated from Jordan High School in Long Beach, California, and subsequently attended Long Beach City College (LBCC) for two years. During his time at LBCC, he distinguished himself as a drum major and had the privilege of participating in the Rose Bowl Parade.
However, life’s path took David back to his roots, Minnesota, following his sisters. There, he continued his education at Winona State University (WSU), where he completed his Bachelor of Science degree in Trombone Performance. It was at WSU that he met the love of his life, Dianne, who served as his accompanist. Together, they enjoyed sharing their musical talents by performing in various local symphonies.
David’s love for music eventually led him to become a dedicated band director. To complement his passion for music, Dianne encouraged him to obtain a teaching certificate. This decision would shape David’s life as he spent years nurturing and inspiring countless students with his love for music.
On September 1, 1973, David and Dianne exchanged vows at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Owatonna, Minnesota. This was the beginning of a beautiful journey together, and David’s family life was as rich and fulfilling as his musical career. He was not only a loving husband to Dianne but also a devoted father, grandfather, brother, and uncle.
Tragically, David’s life was marred by a relentless battle with depression that he ultimately succumbed to on the evening of October 23, 2023. Despite the internal struggles he faced, David was known for his ever-present smile and his compassionate soul. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to friends and family, whether it was fixing something with the right tool or sharing his musical expertise.
David was a beloved member of his community, a favorite holiday character, and a consistent presence at his grandchildren’s sporting events and band concerts. His unwavering commitment to his family and community was remarkable, and it is a testament to the strength of his character. Although David is deeply missed by many, his loved ones take solace in knowing that he is now at peace in the arms of the ever-loving Jesus and Savior. His legacy, both in the world of music and in the hearts of those who knew him, will continue to inspire and bring joy for generations to come.
In lieu of flowers, David’s family has requested that donations be made to “2B Continued,” an organization dedicated to increasing awareness of suicide prevention, mental health, and wellness through advocacy, education, and outreach. Rain’s life was a harmonious blend of music and compassion, and he will forever be remembered for the beautiful notes he added to the world around him.
